Handmade

in Europe

Haparanda bags are made slowly with great care in Northern Europe.

We have great appreciation for our seamstresses and tailors – they work with pride and care. It takes years of experience to qualify as a Haparanda Bagmaker.

Each fabric piece is individually cut by laser to ensure perfect accuracy.

Our bags are made exclusively from fabrics woven in Europe. Every component part used to make a Haparanda bag comes from within the EU, except for our magnetic buckles – made in South Korea. A hallmark of each Haparanda bag is the use of Reindeer nappa – the softest, strongest leather in the World, and the most humane. We believe that the materials and fittings we use are of the highest quality available anywhere, at any price. Everything chosen is also carefully considered to be as ecologically responsible as possible.

Our Fabric

The outer fabric we use for all of our bags is manufactured in the Netherlands from a specially developed, solution-dyed acrylic. It has a cotton-like, natural hand, is exceptionally strong, and impervious to colour fading. This material uses only a small fraction of water in its manufacture – compared with cotton or other natural fibres. It is also 100% recyclable.

Lining

Our lining fabric – in Haparanda’s signature ochre colour – is a polycotton blend, produced here in the EU, and woven with a subtle ripstop pattern.  It is coated with an invisible proofing to protect against accidental spills, and no nasty chemicals are used in its manufacture.

Reindeer Leather

Reindeer leather is extrememly rare. There are only three tanneries working specifically with reindeer leather in the World – all of which are located in the Nordics. We source all of our reindeer nappa from a tiny local tannery, who use only natural ingredients and methods in their tanning process.

Reindeer herds are managed responsibly here in Lappland – an area without borders which stretches across the top of Scandinavia and Finland. These beautiful animals are semi-wild and roam free. Their numbers are carefully controlled by the indigenous Sami people, in order to protect the delicate flora of the Arctic tundra.

Because of the way the animals live, in freedom, reindeer leather is the most humane animal skin available. It’s also the softest and the strongest – more so than even goat kid leather. It is essentially waterproof, very tear resistant, and just beautiful to touch.
